Comparison of Lateral Malleolus Fracture Treating Method with Close Pinning Whit Open Reduction and Plating

Objectives: The fracture of the ankle is one of the most common fractures that is treated by an orthopedic surgeon. Different surgical methods for treating of lateral alveolus fracture have been described. The most commonly used surgical procedure is open reduction and platting. The purpose of this study was to compare of close reduction and pinning with open surgical method with platting.

Materials and Methods: 60 patients by lateral malleolus or bimalleolar fracture who were referred to the Emergency room of shohada hospital of Tabriz were selected.30 patient treat by close reduction and pinning and 30 patients with open reduction whit platting.. Two groups were compare for infection rate, union and skin necrosis

Results: In terms of union, all patients in both groups were completely have union and there was no significant relationship in this regard. There was only one case in open surgery with plate in terms of infection rate, which was also significantly correlated with close pinning

Conclusion: Since the rate of union and the rate of infection are the same in both groups, due to less complications and easier surgical procedures, it is recommended to use a close pinning to lateral malleolus fracture.
