Therapeutic Effects of Citrus Aurantium Components in Psychological States: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Objectives: Citrus aurantium, frequently known as sour orange or bitter orange is native to Asia and nowadays is cultivated widely in different regions such as Mediterranean. Citrus Aurantiums different parts are consumed as an alternative medicine in some areas to treat some disease, and at a recent time  the potential of this medicinal plant has been proven in various studies. In this review, we examined the therapeutic effects of Citrus Aurantium components.

Materials and Methods: We have developed tactful and progressive search strategies to determine studies. Our searches cover a large number of databases including: Cochrane Library, PubMed / MEDLINE, Scopus and Google Scholar during 2010 to April 2019 .In the end, 12 papers of clinical trial type selected for evaluation and analysis. Jadad scale was used to evaluate the quality of papers.

Results: Of the 546 papers found in the preliminary search, 12 clinical trials (1132 participants), were selected for structured review. Studies were in English language. The researches found, consisted of those which evaluated the plants therapeutic role on anxiety, depression, sleep quality, PMS and menopausal symptoms.

Conclusion:  The review of clinical trials brings evidences that different components of Citrus aurantium and especially its flower has therapeutic effects on particularly psychological states like anxiety, depression and insomnia, with aromatherapy by essential oil being the most used method of prescription. Therefore, Citrus aurantium can confidently be used in various disorders which have these psychological aspects among their symptoms.
